Capture Higher Ed is proud to introduce one of our newest partners, Portland State University, Oregon’s most affordable and diverse public university.
Established as a two-year college after World War II to meet the educational needs of returning soldiers, Portland State was located originally in Vanport, Ore., a community along the Columbia River that was built to house wartime shipyard workers. After surviving a devastating flood in 1948, the institution was moved three times, ultimately finding its current downtown Portland home in 1952.
Recognizing the school’s quality and tenacity, the Oregon Legislature granted Portland State four-year college status in 1955, lighting an explosion of growth in programs, faculty and students that led to full university status by 1969.
Today, Portland State serves more than 29,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the heart of one America’s most dynamic cities. Ranked a “Top 10 Most Innovative University in the U.S.” by U.S. News and World Report, the university encompasses 50 city blocks, includes nine schools, offers 226 degree programs and serves students from 91 countries. PSU has more than 170,000 alumni, many who have gone on to work for Nike, Intel, Oregon Health & Science University and much more.
With the goal of being a leading urban research university, Portland State embraces an approach that makes its community an active partner in the classroom. Students and faculty put theory to practice and work with businesses, nonprofits, civic groups and government agencies to solve real problems facing its region.
The city of Portland provides PSU students with an exciting backdrop for several clubs and student activities. The school also has 13 NCAA Division I mens and women’s sports teams — the Vikings — that compete in the Big Sky Conference.
Portland State’s mission is to “let knowledge serve the city” and reflects the university’s dedication to finding innovative, sustainable solutions to local and global problems. We are proud to welcome Portland State University to the Capture family of partners.
